The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch often marks my first opportunity of the year to delve into wildlife photography with the approval of my kids. With binoculars made out of used toilet rolls in hand, my kids choose a window and then frantically record which birds they see in our garden.
My camera lens doubles up as a telescope for identification but what it is really all about is the chance to capture a great picture.
It is January so light isn’t great but luckily we’ve picked the one day this week that isn’t overcast. From indoors, so as not to scare off any birds, and with a fast shutter speed I snap hoping for a picture I’m happy to share. I’m glad to say there are a few. The day was enjoyable and I’d like to think we all learned something.
Not a bad year counting birds, though these birds normally visit in bigger groups. This was the first year we have been greeted by a Goldfinch and a female Blackcap, the male from last year absent.
Our sightings were as follows:
Black Bird 2
Blue Tit 3
Coal Tit 1
Great Tit 2
Long-tailed Tit 2
Dunnock 3
Goldfinch 1
Robin 2
Magpie 1
Wood Pigeon 3
Rock Pidgeon 2
Black Cap (Female) 1
Starling 21
My next goal is to catch the elusive Woodpecker that is extremely camera shy.
